The Quarterfinal That Ended a Curse
Team Spirit hadn't beaten this version of Vitality in six straight matches, a run stretching back to October 2024. Pre-match previews billed it as a duel between donk and ZywOo, the two players most associated with their teams' identities, and for once the storyline undersold what actually happened. Spirit opened with a 13-11 win on Anubis, lost a tight overtime battle on Nuke 14-16, then obliterated the Stake-sponsored side 13-3 on Mirage to close out the series 2-1 and finally break the streak.
Danil "donk" Kryshkovets was the reason it happened - 70 kills against 43 deaths across the three maps, 101 average damage per round, and a 1.46 rating that made him comfortably the best player on the server. He'd go on to be named MVP of the entire tournament, a result Stake had no ability to influence but every reason to notice, given how much of Stake's own broadcast exposure had ridden on Vitality getting past exactly this matchup.
Team Spirit Finished What They Started
Spirit didn't stop at the semifinal. On August 23, they closed out the tournament 3-1 over FUT Esports in the grand final - dropping Cache 10-13, then reeling off Anubis 16-13, Ancient 16-14, and Nuke 13-5 to lift the trophy and the $600,000 that came with it, a final Vitality and Stake could only watch from home. It capped an unusual day for the organization: hours earlier and a continent away, Spirit's Dota 2 roster beat TEAM VISION 3-2 in Shanghai to win The International 2026, making Spirit the first organization ever to hold Dota 2's Aegis of Champions three times - and giving Spirit two separate world titles, in two separate games, on the same calendar day.
For Vitality, and for Stake, watching from outside the final four, the consolation was a $60,000 payout for a 5th-8th finish and a reminder of how thin the margins are at this level - one overtime map on Nuke against Spirit went Vitality's way, and it still wasn't enough to keep the run alive.
Who's Actually on Vitality's CS2 Roster
The lineup Stake backs at events like EWC hasn't changed much in structure, even as roles inside it keep evolving. ZywOo remains the focal point as the team's primary AWPer and the player Stake's own marketing leans on most, apEX calls the strategy as in-game leader, flameZ presses tempo as the entry fragger, ropz brings late-round composure from his years at the top of the scene, and mezii fills in wherever the system needs a connector between the stars.
One name missing from that EWC roster is Justinas "jL" Lekavicius, signed on August 5 as a stand-in - but not for this tournament, and not yet in a Stake-branded jersey. Vitality confirmed jL's first appearance will come at BLAST Open Porto, filling in for mezii, and again at October's PGL Masters Bucharest in place of apEX, with both regulars stepping away briefly for family reasons rather than performance ones. At EWC itself, under Stake's branding, Vitality played its full standard five.
What Comes Next for Stake and Vitality
A quarterfinal exit doesn't end a multi-year deal, and nothing in how Stake or Vitality has talked about the partnership suggests EWC 2026 changes the arrangement. The Stake logo stays on the jersey for BLAST Open Porto and PGL Masters Bucharest, the next two stops on Vitality's calendar, and for whatever comes after that as the CS2 season moves toward its next Major.
